The Consequences of the Nigerian Impressive $25 Million Art Center and the Historic Artworks

Nigeria's impressive new Museum of West African Art (Mowaa) has ended up in the crosshairs of local power politics during the time it was supposed to – but was unable – to open its doors to the public for the first time.

The Major Initiative

The large-scale complex stands in the center of the Edo state capital, main city of the southern area of Edo – and contains an excavation site and buildings planned by celebrated dual heritage architect Sir David Adjaye, best known for the Smithsonian African American Museum that began operations in Washington in 2016.

It has been 60 months in the making – and is envisioned to showcase both the heritage and the modern times of creativity in the locale known for the historic artworks, artworks taken from the royal palace by British soldiers in the nineteenth century.

Setup and Prospects

It is notable – and prior to the anticipated opening, Mowaa was active with staff committed to show it is a institution that can compete with established cultural centers in the West.

Inside art restorers carefully opened cultural items from secure wrapping, checking each artifact and taking meticulous documentation before placing them on display surfaces and plinths.

Specialists fine-tuned climate control systems. In the scientific facility, personnel calibrated equipment meant to preserve centuries-old items.

Investment and Economic Plans

The initiative has been the brainchild of entrepreneur Phillip Ihenacho – currently Mowaa's managing director.

"I aim us to have a significant economic impact on communities around here," he told journalists, mentioning that he wanted to make the city "a cultural destination."

Mowaa, a non-profit national foundation, sees itself establishing in excess of 30,000 direct and indirect jobs and contributing more than $80m each year to the local cultural industry through alliances and activities.

Investment and Administrative Problems

It has taken $25m to get here – money collected from multiple contributors, such as the French and German governments, the London institution and the Edo state government.

But currently the local government has withdrawn support from under it – revoking the utilization of the property on which the museum was built.

An government communicator explained this was because in the original paperwork it had called itself Edo Museum of West African Art – and it had later eliminated "the state identifier" from its name.

Protests and Political Intervention

This statement came after protests on Sunday, when activists invaded the campus calling for it be called the Benin Royal Museum.

A disruptive crowd confronted foreign guests at the venue ahead of the opening – requiring them to be quickly removed under official guard.

President Bola Tinubu has also stepped in to try and resolve the dispute, setting up a high-level committee to address the controversy.

Political Complexities

But why has this evolved into so controversial – and such a PR disaster?

The majority of it comes down to internal conflicts at a local state level, as it was the former state leader Godwin Obaseki – whose administration concluded last year – who was a key supporter of the museum.

And it seems the leadership of the recently elected official, a strong supporter of the area king, referred to as the traditional leader, may want increased control in the venture. The activists on the weekend, for example, were demanding that the facility be placed under the supervision of Oba Ewuare II.

The Benin Bronzes Controversy

This highlights the controversial matter of the historical artworks, one of Africa's most renowned cultural treasures.

Because although the museum does eventually begin operations, these artifacts will be noticeably missing.

They are brass, elephant tusk and wooden carvings that once embellished the royal palace of the ancient kingdom before colonial troops took them in 1897 during a colonial invasion.

Nowadays, thousands stay spread across institutions in Europe and North America -- such as the UK institution, Berlin's Humboldt Forum and the American museum.

Return Initiatives

Their return has become one of the most debated discussions in the worldwide cultural sector. About 150 have now come back – and more are due to follow.

When proposals for the institution in Benin City were first announced in recent years, the movers and shakers on the country's cultural sector anticipated it would become their perfect venue – a modern campus to display them to the global audience.

But the situation became complicated two years ago after the national authorities stated that the royal leader would be the legal custodian of any returned bronzes – and the monarch's court pushed for a institution under the monarch's supervision, opposing the preferences of the former governor.

Diplomatic Challenges

This placed Mowaa in a difficult situation: expressing a clear stance on repatriation while staying tactful on ownership – and emphasising its larger purpose, which led to|c
