The actress and writer exploring the side-splitting comedy about that messy glamour of Gen Z life

The performer appears on the online meeting and immediately begins an excuse. “I can’t believe I’m late!” she exclaims, sounding truly regretful. Although she's only slightly delayed, she wants to justify. “I have such a problem, because I’m a yapper on the phone. “Earlier calls made me late—I just can’t stop chatting!” Fortunately, during an interview, this is precisely what you want to hear. Additionally, it’s quite unsurprising. Those who know the fearlessly LGBTQ+ and unapologetically crass film titled Bottoms—that she collaborated on with her creative partner and starred in with collaborator Ayo Edebiri—would understand that she has plenty to share, be it about roles, intimacy, or the pros of starting a high-school fight club. Plus, once you finish the recent multi-episode HBO series titled I Love LA, viewers realize that she carries additional perspectives on the darker side of Gen Z life (Now in her thirties, she is an honorary member for this generation, straddling eras skilled for bridging millennials and Gen Z).

Guiding Lights and Storytelling Approach

Parallels to Lena Dunham’s Girls naturally arise and the actress is a fan, citing it alongside the HBO hit, the acclaimed comedy and the innovative program as influences for I Love LA, which follows the journey of online personality played by Odessa A’Zion and ally who is also aspiring talent manager portrayed by Sennott. Notably, the largest spot on the moodboard went to the popular sitcom, the HBO sitcom about an up-and-coming celebrity succeeding in an often-seedy entertainment industry (memorable line: “happiness eludes everyone but failures in this city”). She discovered it throughout COVID-19, became “obsessed”, and resolved to put her own twist on it “targeting women and LGBTQ+ viewers”.

“I wanted to make a show where the internet, not Hollywood, was the industry, because my career started online,” she notes. The concept for I Love LA emerged—in part—from personal, originally fractious, transition to Los Angeles and from the saturn return, a frequently discussed phenomenon for followers. It was a phase that involved her grasp major insights, work-wise and individually. “In my early 20s I was so messy, crying in public everywhere, all the time,” she says. “In my mid-20s, I moved to LA and got settled. And then I felt like everything started to just fall apart. “It resembled a series of extreme challenges…”

Starting Out

Growing up in the East Coast, the star started creating and acting comedy while studying acting at a prestigious arts school. “Despite trying every conventional route, I couldn’t find my footing,” she says. “Auditions for university comedy troupes led to universal rejection. “None of the university plays cast me either.” “It left me questioning my purpose and place.”

Sennott decided to act independently, performing at open mics with her friend and uploading hilarious (and very) unconventional online content digitally. One, Baby Cult, followed characters fetishistically fixated on having babies; another portrayed being employed at the brand Hollister as like being stuck in a scary movie. By chance, she connected with Emma through the university’s film scene and eventually starring in her initial project, titled Shiva Baby, an anxious comedy set at a funeral gathering with echoes of Uncut Gems. The big theme of her journey, she explains, has been peers giving her a shot, rather than the industry at large. So the old guard wasn’t helpful? “They were not involved”, she confirms, stating amusedly: “They don’t want us to win.”

Rising Success

Individuals who had doubts regarding Sennott previously will certainly be feeling foolish currently. Through she calls a “incredibly circular” turn of events, she seems to have manifested her dream vehicle. A few years back she uploaded content called “it’s LA” on the internet, in which she lampooned Hollywood trailers (“Substance abuse is rampant here”). Now, she’s executive producer (with the co-writer) of a comedy about LA residents managing advantages of internet fame (such as partying at Elijah Wood’s house) with drawbacks (your client being accused of being a intoxicated criminal, and possibly becoming a “brand unsafe” persona non grata).
